Restful sleep
We all want restful sleep. But how do we get restful sleep when we are surrounded, situations that are not peaceful and people that are not peaceful? Here are a few tips to help you achieve the PEACE that you want so that you can get the sleep that you need:
P Practice relaxation techniques. There are many relaxation techniques from guided meditation to yoga. One of my clients told me that in order to relax, she listens to Martha Stewart! Martha Stewart has a soothing, monotone voice that relaxes her. Many people listen to a guided imagery recording either on their stereo or on their ipod as they are trying to fall asleep. Yoga and similar stretching exercises can create a calmness in the mind and body, but be careful not to do strenuous exercise right before bed as this will likely give you more energy. If you do strenuous exercise, do it early in the morning. This will help your body be ready to sleep when it’s time for bed
E Eat less at night. You want your body to rest and rejuvenate while you are sleeping. You get better rest on an empty stomach because your body doesn’t have to digest food through the night and it can focus on cellular and muscle repair.
A Accomplish at least one goal. People who sleep better are people who feel that they have accomplished something that day. Before you go to sleep, thing about the goals that you have a accomplished that day. If you are close to completing a goal, try to finish it before you go to bed instead of putting it off until tomorrow.
C Count your blessings. Seriously. Gratitude will make you feel happier and more at peace. It will also help put the worried mind at ease. Some people create a gratitude journal and write ten things that they are grateful for each night before they go to sleep. Along those same lines, eliminate all thoughts about what you have to do tomorrow, what you didn’t do today, etc.. Easier said than done? The best way to do this is to write them down. Thoughts are things – just like dirty laundry. They won’t go away until we do something with them. Take your thoughts, worries, “to-dos” out of your head and put them on a piece of paper that you can look at and act upon tomorrow.
E Eliminate artificial light. I just read an article about how artificial light keeps many people awake at night or wakes them up from a sound sleep. Eliminate all unnecessary sounds. And never ever sleep with the television on. This is not adding to your peace of mind!
Follow these steps and you will find that a restful sleep is waiting for you tonight.
